DIY Felt Dino Hat for a Birthday Party

Operation dinosaur party for my son’s 3rd birthday is in full force around here, so I recently broke out my glue gun and crafted up a special party hat for the birthday boy. It was so simple and cheap! Just head to your local dollar store to pick up a pack of inexpensive paper hats, then get ready to transform them into something truly unique for your child’s big day.

Aside from being easy, this project is also great because it can be adapted to fit with different party themes. You can use just about any type of stencil that will fit onto your hat—not just a dinosaur one!

  • Paper Party Hat
  • Felt (2 colors)
  • Large Pom Pom
  • Heat n Bond Iron-On Adhesive (No-Sew)
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Dinosaur Stencil
  • Fabric Pencil
  • Iron
  • Hot Glue Gun

Step 1: Open up a paper party hat so it is lying flat and trace the shape onto a piece of felt using a fabric pencil. Don’t remove the elastic from the hat. Cut around the traced line, about 1/2 inch outside of the line.

Step 2: Iron a small piece of Heat n Bond to the second color of felt. Trace the dinosaur stencil onto the backing of the Heat n Bond and use fabric scissors to cut out the dinosaur. Remove the Heat n Bond backing and iron onto the center of the piece of felt from Step 1.

Step 3: Use a hot glue gun to attach the piece of felt in Step 1 to the paper part hat. Fold and glue down the excess felt around the hat, taking care not to glue down the elastic from the hat. Hot glue the ends of the hat together to form a cone. Glue a large pom pom to the top of the hat.

Step 4: Place hat on child before singing Happy Birthday!
