DIY Glitter Decor Ideas

Glitter makes everything better. Here are a few glam projects you can make with your favorite craft supply!

After glitterizing my keys on a whim a few weeks ago, I realized how much I missed the staple craft I had so much fun with as a kid. And now, as an adult, being responsible for cleaning my own mess up, I also realized how easy it is to actually control the glitter from getting all over, which was the only reason I ever hesitated from breaking it out of the craft bin.

Check out some of the DIY glitter decorations we made!

Candles are such an easy and natural way to give your decor a little glitter love. We took two routes with our candles: an ombre style votive and a metallic looking pillar.

The votives were simple to make using our Mod Podge paint technique that mixes the glue with our American Crafts glitter.

We applied a first layer of the gold glitter to the entire votive, then once that coat dried, we applied a second layer of truffle colored glitter from the mid-point of the votive down, and then finally, once that layer dried, we did a third layer of copper at the very bottom.

This layered technique gave us the ombre look we were looking for and really looked great when the candles were lit.

To give the pillar candle its metallic sparkle, we applied the glitter the same way - with Mod Podge glitter paint. This time, we blended two of the American Crafts glitters - charcoal and stone - together with the Mod Podge and painted it directly onto our candle. It required 3 coats total to achieve such a solid look at bottom, but just two closer to the top.

We didn't just dress up our candles with glitter either! Mason jars were a must try on our list. For one thing, we've got plenty in the office from the past year's mason jar craze, and for another, they just lend themselves so well to the craft!

We went for three different shades. A gold, silver and darker metal shade. Two of those we filled with water and plopped in flowers which really turned out so pretty, and for the other, we chose to display some marshmallow pops dressed in edible glitter for the team here in the office to enjoy.

The vases make for a simple and easy way to dress up any dinner party table, and after noting so, we decided to try our glitter on a few more table items including martini glasses and napkin rings.

We skipped the Mod Podge paint technique here and went with the classic paint on glue, roll around in glitter option. This gave the surfaces a much more solid appearance. We dipped in glitter twice, allowing the surface to set between glue coats, and after the second dip, we coated the surfaces with two additional coats of Mod Podge to insure a solid, chip free look that wouldn't come off in our hands.
