DIY Glitzy Gold Candle Stick Gift

I buy more candles in the winter than any other time of year and love giving out candle-sticks to keep the flames burning bright for my friends and family. These gold candle sticks are simple to make, taking less than 30 minutes to go from start to finish no including final drying time.

I opted for store bought pressed wood candle sticks, but you can repurpose thrift store ones for a fraction of the price (and most likely more character too). The beauty of this craft is that you can be as daring or as minimalist as you like, changing the color, the glitter pattern and the design to make it your own.

To speed up the drying time, I use a hair dryer after I painted the sticks, but on a dry day they will air dry within an hour.

Supplies
  • Gold Spray Paint
  • Clear Spray Paint
  • Mod Podge
  • Extra Fine Glitter
  • Foam Brush
Directions

Step 1: If you are using pressed wood or wooden sticks without a varnish or paint layer, spray paint them with clear varnish before painting them your desired color. This process limits the amount of time you will need color spray your sticks and allows the color to dry evenly.

Step 2: Spray your candle sticks with the color of your choosing, taking care to be far enough away to avoid drips, but close enough to spray an even coverage. Once painted, allow them to dry until you can handle the sticks without getting paint on your fingers.

Step 3: Using the foam brush, apply a thick layer of Mod Podge to the surface that you want the glitter to stick to; taking care that the layer is even and flat.

Step 4: While the Mod Podge is still wet, sprinkle the extra fine glitter across the Mod Podge area. (Note, using a bigger grade of glitter will give the finish a chunky rather than fine finish).

Step 5: Shake off the excess glitter and allow it to dry for an hour before wrapping.
