Heart Decoration Ideas for Valentine's Day

Decorations for Valentine's Day needn't be bursting with red and pink. Use the iconic heart shape to inspire your Valentine's Day decorations for a look that's festive, yet chic and fitting for your style.

Below are tutorials for a DIY burlap heart wreath, a heart topiary and a paper hearts tree decoration. You can be as colorful or neutral with your hues, and as simple or complicated with how you embellish each of these heart inspired decorations for Valentine's Day.

DIY Burlap Heart Wreath Decoration

This lovely wreath was made by threading a burlap ribbon onto a wire hanger. It was an easy project and the finished wreath added some classy Valentine's Day decor to my home.

  • wire pants hanger (with a rolled tube bottom)
  • 1 1/4 inch wide textured ribbon
  • pliers
  • flora sprig
  • Styrofoam
  • red ribbon

Step 1: Remove the rolled tube from the wire hanger. Shape the wire into a heart-shape.

Step 2: Thread the ribbon onto the hanger in accordion-style pleats. Make the pleats fairly close together, adjusting the fullness as you go.

Step 3: Join the two ends of the wire heart together and pinch tightly together with pliers. Adjust the gathers.

Step 4: Tuck a floral sprig of ivy into the ribbon and hot-glue a bright red bow in place. It's ready to hang!

Mini Heart Topiaries

These small topiaries can be used to decorate your Valentine's Day table, or they're perfect as place holders or adorable little party favors.

  • Styrofoam heart picks
  • gold spray paint
  • 2-inch terra cotta pots
  • 6-inch length coat-hanger wire for each topiary
  • 26 gauge wire
  • florist foam
  • ribbon

Step 1: I began with a styrofoam heart pick. You can find these in the Craft Stores close to Valentine's Day. I wanted to create an elegant little topiary for my table setting so I spray painted the red heart with gold paint. When it's dry, remove the heart from its wooden stick.

Step 2: Cut florist foam to fit snugly inside the little pot. To give the wire "stem" a little more texture, and interest, I wrapped a couple of pieces of 26 gauge wire in a spiral shape around it.

Step 3: Insert the heart on to the wire stem. Add moss to the top to cover the foam. Tie a ribbon around your topiary and you have an elegant little Valentine gift or decor.

DIY Heart Valentine's Day Tree Decoration

Create a fun bouquet of valentines with some bare branches and cut-out hearts. I used a heart-shaped punch to cut hearts from lavender and mint green polka-dotted designer paper.

I applied adhesive to one side of the heart-shape, placed it on the bare branch, and adhered another heart shape to the back. Fill a vase up. It's a beautiful little bouquet, and never needs water!
