DIY Paper Poppy Birthday Place Setting: Get the How-To

Pretty flowers are a centerpiece staple when you’re throwing and event. When you’ve got lots of tables to fill, or just want something unique, putting masses of blooms in every nook and cranny can get mighty expensive.

With a little work and know-how, though, paper flowers can create a beautiful look and big impact…for pennies.

For my girlfriend’s birthday, I decided to make big bright poppy blooms that are as sunny and vibrant as she is. There are a few steps to make them, and they do take a bit of time, but the process is simple, I promise!

  • Floral wire
  • Green floral tape
  • Black scrapbook paper
  • Red crepe paper

Step 1: Cut a 2.5 inch x 5 inch strip of black paper. Cut the paper into a fringe.

Step 2: Fold a 18 inch piece floral wire in half. Wrap floral tape around the bend a few times. If you’ve never worked with floral tape, you just have to pull on it gently a bit to get it sticky as you wrap.

Step 3: Place your wrapped wire on the part of the fringed paper that is not cut. Roll your fringe around the wire. Once you’re all rolled up, floral tape the fringe to the wire and continue wrapping the wire until it’s completely covered. This makes your stem.

Step 4: Next, we’re going to make petals out of our crepe paper. Note: this is not tissue paper, it’s crepe, kind of like what streamers are made of. It’s heavier and will stand more stiffly than tissue. I free-hand cut my petals about 5 inches wide by 7 inches tall. You’ll need 5-6 petals for each poppy, and they don’t all have to be exactly the same size, but it’s good if they’re close!

Step 5: Using your floral tape, simply wrap the petal around the top of the stem, bunching the base, and wrap the floral tape around the bottom to adhere it to the stem. Repeat for each petal until all five (or six!) are on your flower. Each flower will take about 15 minutes to make. Once you have a bundle, you’re ready to make a beautiful centerpiece!
