DIY Paper Sunshine Garland

Simple shapes, such as the sunshine used for our first birthday party, make a big impact on party decor when strung together in a garland.

I used my personal cutting machine to cut out sunshine shapes, but you can buy die-cuts at a craft store, use a paper punch or even hand cut your preferred shapes. After the shapes were cut, I ran them through the sewing machine to create a sturdy, yet flexible banner for the food table.

Making this party decoration is almost too easy; the hardest part is figuring out how many shapes you need to reach across the table. To do this, I measured the width of the shapes and divided this number by the width of my table. So, I needed about 12 3-inch sunshines for my 3-foot table.

Once you have your shapes ready, all you have to do is string them together. Here's how to do it and make a great themed decoration perfect for any party. It's so quick, you can make enough to hang just about anywhere from the tables to along the mantle to dangling from the ceiling.

Supplies

cardstock or die-cuts
cutting device
sewing machine

Directions

Step 1:  Cut out your shapes (or if you have die-cuts, simply gather the number you need.

Step 2: Stack the shapes next to your sewing machine. Place the first one on the machine, and stitch all the way across. As you get to the end, have the next shape ready to feed through so the thread connects them.

Step 3: Hang it up. Unlike other garlands made with ribbon or string, the thread used for this one isn't really strong enough to hold it up. I used straight pins to attach my garland to the fabric tablecloth. If you want to hang it from something without fabric, such as a mantle, tape short pieces of ribbon to each end.
