DIY Party Hat

Birthday guests aren't fully dressed until they're wearing party hats! Make customized cone-shaped hats out of soft and colorful craft foam, or use construction paper.

If you want to use this craft for a birthday party activity, make the cones and cut out the letters beforehand. Avoid the glue and tape and use Glue Dots® to dry, these hats can be worn as soon as they're made! Plus, the Glue Dots are completely mess-free.

Supplies

Craft foam
Mini Glue Dots®
1" Glue Lines®
Thin ribbon
Wide ribbon
Elastic string
Stapler

Directions

Step 1: Take a sheet of craft foam and roll it so that the top is in a cone shape with a 1/4 to 1/2 inch hole in the top -- don't worry that the bottom isn't even.

Step 2: Trim the excess, and secure the seam at the back of the hat with a 1" Glue Line. Though there are other ways to hold this hat together, we really recommend Glue Dots. They're easy to use and won't create the mess (or safety issue!) that a glue gun or staples will produce. Plus, they create a more seamless design.

Cut around the bottom of the hat to make it the size you want -- I made a mini hat.

Step 3: Personalize the hat with the child's first initial or name. I cut an "H" out of craft foam and attached it to the front using Mini Glue Dots. You can add any embellishments you like -- since I made a princessy hat, I attached thin ribbon around the hat using 1" Glue Lines, and pulled the ends of a folded length of wide ribbon through the hole in the top, adhereing the bottom loop to the inside of the hat with a Mini Glue Dot.

Step 4: Secure a length of elastic string to either side of the base of the hat for a chin strap. You can do this by punching a tiny hole in each side of the hat and tying off the strap, or like we did by adhering it using a Mini Glue Dot.

Make a birthday crown for the guest of honor using a similar technique and supplies!
