DIY Pleated Sunshine Garland

The table for our sunshine birthday party that we used to display our food was set up in front of a large window. This was convenient for both the party space and the fact that the sunshine was beaming through!

To add a decorative touch to this important focal point, but still keep things easy, I decided to frame the window and table with a garland of pleated sunshines (actually simple paper fans.)

Here's how to recreate the entire window look - including the how-to for my garland.

scrapbook paper in party colors (in this case, yellow and gray)
embellishments (optional)

Step 1: Using different patterns of yellow and gray scrapbook paper, I cut two strips of paper for each fan and folded them accordion style. I used both 3-inch and 2-inch wide strips to create different sized fans

Step 2: After folding, I glued the strips together end to end forming a circle and pushed one of the edges together in the center securing with hot glue.

Step 3: The fans were pretty just like that, but I added additional embellishments in the center of some of them.

To Assemble the Garland

To create the garland, all the fans were attached to yellow yarn. I tried to alternate colors and sizes of the fans to keep it interesting and added a glittery number one to the center piece, which helped tie the garland to the rest of the party decorations.

Get the Complete Look

To complete the window, a black-and-white picture of the birthday girl and her yarn-wrapped initials hang from the middle.

The initials (one for the first and middle names) are simply paper mache letters from the craft store covered in the same yarn used on the garland.

After the party, the letters will go in the nursery, which just happens to be yellow!
