DIY Rice Bag Pillows

Rice bag pillows are a simple and fun DIY craft. Spruce up your home décor by adding these rice bag pillows to the mix or you can give them as gifts.

Nothing shows you care more for your loved ones than a hand-made gift that they can keep and display in their homes forever.

Step 1: First choose the type of bags that you would like to use for your pillow. I love these rice bags that have a vintage feel. These are real rice bags I bought online from a Midwestern farmer. It is truly amazing what you can find on the internet if you just search. I bought 25 rice bags for just $30. Other bag options include old coffee bean bags or any type of burlap bag. If you are using burlap you will want to take the extra measure of lining the bag first with another more tightly knit material. As far as finding bags-- it never hurts to ask around! If you want old coffee bean bags you can try asking your local coffee shops.

Step 2: Fill the pillow with pillow stuffing. I suggest stuffing the pillow to the max. It might seem as though the pillow is over full, but with time the stuffing in the pillow will settle so it’s best to overestimate when filling your bag.

Step 3: At the open end of your bag, fold the ends down about a half an inch. This will make the seam of the bag a clean line when you are ready to sew. Once you fold the ends down, safety pin the bag across the top. I started from the edges and worked my way in, so that the seam would be even. The safety pins will hold the bag closed in preparation to sew it shut.

Step 4: Thread your needle with a thread that matches your bag. I used a thick cream colored thread to match the material of my rice bags. Now you are ready to sew! I stitched my bags across the top right above my safety pins.

Voila! You now have hand-made pillows after just 4 easy steps. I love the vintage look and feel of these rice bag pillows. They are very unique and knowing that they are handmade is such a sweet bonus.

I have also given these pillows as gifts and my recipients love them!
