DIY Summer Coastal Coasters

These coastal coasters will not only save your tabletops, but they just might save the day. For when a casual summer cocktail party needs an extra touch of creativity, a little DIY goes a long, long way.

Inspired by the simplicity and whimsy of the sea, these nautical coasters are a cheap and easy way to add a kiss of the cape to even the most landlocked affair.

Supplies

3-4 yards cotton rope, cut into 1-yard segments
2 sheets felt
Thread in same color as rope
Needle
Scissors
Scotch tape

Directions

Step 1: Start by taping off one end of your rope segment to prevent fraying. Begin coiling rope so that taped end is in the center of coil.

Step 2: As you coil, stitch the inner rope to outer rope as shown to keep coil together. The more stitches you make, the sturdier your coaster will be. Continue coiling and stitching until you’ve reached your desired coaster size, tuck loose end into wrong side of coaster and stitch in place.

Step 3: Using your coil as a template cut a circle out of felt. For an easy, quick fix hot glue circle to bottom of coaster and let dry flat. For a sturdier, more decorative way to attach felt use a basic blanket stitch around the coaster’s perimeter. Store beneath a stack of books or other flat, heavy objects to flatten out and prepare coasters for drink resting.

All done!
