Earth Day Ideas for Kids

Going green should start young! This year, take advantage of Earth Day this April get the kiddies excited about cleaning and preserving nature at a young age to ensure they adopt eco-friendly habits that will last for the rest of their lives.

We've got an assortment of ideas to encourage Earth-lving habits. Paying specific attention to day-to-day activities like throwing away trash or choosing organic foods to eat are especially important.

Since Earth Day 2012 falls on a Sunday, you may want to turn the entire day with the kids into a lesson on eco-friendly ideas. Take the day to plant a garden in the yard or head to the park to clean it up in time for summer.

Other Ideas to Celebrate Earth Day with Your Kids:

Make bird baths or feeders with your kids. Turn old, large bowls into DIY baths for the birdies by filling them with water and placing them atop a table in the yard. You can also make your own feeders if you have old pine cone decorations from the holiday season. Clean them off, cover with peanut butter and then roll them in seeds for the birds to enjoy! The kids will get a kick at watching the birds all day.

Plant a tree in your yard or a row of tulip bulbs that will bloom each spring. If you don't have outdoor space to do that, you could also teach the kids about planting with a windowsill garden - grow fresh herbs to garnish your dinners with. Not only will the kids learn about how plants grow, they'll also feel such pride using their very own herbs in dinner dishes.

Clean up your neighborhood or a local park. Grab a trash bag and a pair of gloves, and go out on a trash hunt. You may want to organize this activity with other families in your neighborhood.

Hit the 'hood and volunteer to pull weeds, cut the grass, and water the lawn.

Test your kids' recycling I.Q. by having them pick out what is and what is not recyclable. Turn this into a daily activity in the week leading up to or after Earth Day - by the end of the week, they'll be pros and won't need encouragement to practice eco-friendly habit.

Have a fun day in the dirt by letting your kids dig for worms. April's prime planting time so take advantage of their little hands and excitement to get dirty by having them help you turn over the lawn or potting plot for your plants.

If it happens to be raining, why not get wet? Water is an important part of the ecosystem's many processes. Head outside, splash around, dance in the rain and than discuss the water cycle with your kids!

Make it a Race! Turn shower time into an activity. Encouraging the kids to use less water means water savings for both you and the environment.
