Easy Embroidered Cards Craft for Kids

A homemade card is the perfect Father’s Day gift for the hard-to-buy-for dad who’s received his fair share of ties and cufflinks over the years.

These sweet, simple, and tactile cards will look great displayed on his desk at work or hung on the fridge at home for all to see. Even if you’re not a wiz with a needle, you’ll be able to stitch up one of these cute little cards in no time.

Supplies

Cardstock
Embroidery floss in three colors
Scissors
Embroidery needle
Pencil

Directions

Start by cutting you cardstock to size—the card can be as big or small as you’d like, but keep in mind that smaller stitches can be tedious and more challenging for beginners.

Once you’ve cut it to your desired length and width, carefully fold the cardstock in half, making a deep crease with the aid of a ruler or bone folder.

If you are new to stitching or have a more complicated design in mind than our simple ties, you may want to first sketch your pattern out with a pencil. If not, you can begin poking holes in the cardstock at the beginning and end of each line. These holes will make it easier to move in and out of the cardstock once you begin your stitching.

Next thread your needle with whichever color floss you would like to use for your outline, and get to stitching! Always start from the wrong side of your work so that your knots don’t show, and take care not to come in and out the same hole as this will undo your stitch.

Once you have finished outlining the tie, thread a needle with a second color and make vertical stripes inside your outline. Repeat the same steps for the third color, and continue on until you have filled your desired amount of space. Feel free to get creative with crisscrosses, zig-zags or even French knots—the sky is the limit with stitched cards!
