Elegant Centerpiece Ideas for a New Year's Eve Dinner Party

Elegance in tablescapes and table settings comes from having well-coordinated pieces with beautiful lines and a fair bit of simplicity in design. That all sounds a lot harder to achieve than it actually is.

Really, you just need to pick items that are fuss-free and match fairly closely when you’re arranging your table. My personal elegant go-to centerpiece is a nice arrangement of flowers surrounded by a few clear tea lights.

Vases filled with fresh flowers are always a perfect touch, so creating or choosing a vase that meshes seamlessly with the rest of the table to display those flowers is very important.

And you don’t need to break your budget or scour the stores to find the perfectly coordinated vase. With a few simple items, you can easily make one yourself! Old florist vases are widely available at thrift stores, and chances are you have a few lurking under your cupboards to use.

  • Clear glass vase
  • Blue painters tape
  • Spray paint
  • Fresh flowers (I used white roses from 1-800 Flowers)

Step 1: Carefully tape your vase 3/4 to 2/3 of the way down with a perfectly horizontal line all the way around the vessel. You might need to set the vase on a level surface and check the tape while you’re putting it on to make sure it’s in the right place. An unlevel line will look a tad bit funny in the final product with this DIY. The blue painters tape can easily be repositioned to make that process easier.

Step 2: After your perfectly horizontal line is taped off, apply tape to the rest of the top of the vase. You’ll also want to cover the opening completely so no spray paint finds its way inside.

Step 3: Apply the spray paint to the glass in several light coats. Too much paint at once will create unwanted drips. Once the paint is completely dry, carefully remove the painters tape and your vase is ready to use.
