Supplies

Long bamboo skewers
Feathers in various colors
Non-toxic, food-safe paints
Paint brushes
Masking tape
Kraft glue
Scissors

Directions

Step 1: Start by deciding what pattern you’d like on your arrow’s shaft, and using thin strips of masking tape mark your stripes. Remember, anything underneath the tape will be the color of the bamboo, so if you’d like a solid stripe pattern, you’ll have to do two rounds of taping: the initial one and one after the first set of stripes dries.

Step 2: Once you have finished taping your skewer, begin painting using thin, even strokes. Allow paint to dry thoroughly before attaching feathers. While you wait you can begin prepping the feathers for gluing. start by finding two feathers of the same
color—they don’t have to be the same size since you’ll be shaping them to any size you want.

Step 3: Using the scissors cut one feather along the center vein and discard the half not attached to the vein. Do the same to the other feather, only on the opposite side of the vein. Begin shaping the feather halves by cutting against the grain and rounding out the outer edges. The goal is to make each half look as though it came from the same feather once it is attached to the skewer.

Step 4: Once you have achieved your desired feather shape, dab a tiny amount of glue along the straight edge of both feathers. Line the feather edge up with the flat end of your skewer and press firmly until feather adheres to the bamboo. Repeat with other feather. Let dry for 15 to 20 minutes and enjoy!
