Felt Ring Christmas Countdown Garland

As a little girl, one of my favorite holiday traditions was making paper ring garland. I would hang the garland from my ceiling and rip off a ring every morning, counting down the days until Christmas. The anticipation of Christmas is part of what makes it so magical for kids

I knew I wanted to start this same paper ring tradition with my own child, but I wanted a more eco-friendly version that could be used year after year. Felt rings attached with hook and loop fasteners were the perfect solution.

I loved how the felt rings turned out, so much that I decided to make a few more to hang on my tree in place of traditional garland. They’d also look great hanging above a fireplace or as holiday party décor. Mix and match coordinating colors for a fun look.

Supplies
  • Felt (an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet will make 11 rings)
  • Thin Ribbon
  • Pinking Shears
  • Scissors or Rotary Cutter
  • Craft glue or Hot Glue
  • Ruler
  • Fabric Pencil
  • Hook & Loop Velcro Fasteners
Directions

Step 1: Using a ruler and fabric pencil, mark lines down an 8.5 x 11 inch felt sheet an inch apart. You should end up with 11 – 11 x 8.5 inch strips per sheet. Cut down the lines using pinking shears.

Step 2: Cut 11 inch long ribbon pieces and adhere to the middle of the felt strips.

Step 3: Adhere or sew hook and loop fasteners to each felt strip, so it can close to make a ring.

Step 4: Attach the rings together to form garland. Hang from the ceiling and use as a countdown to Christmas or wrap around your Christmas tree as garland.
