Five Fun & Easy Camp Out Recipes the Whole Family Will Love

Cooking on the open fire is one of our favorite summer pastimes, and one that the children never tire of requesting.

The key to any great cookout is to have fire-safe cooking pots, and to create a recipe where cooking temperatures are forgiving.  Here are my 5 favorite camp out recipes:

1. Sweet Corn on the Cob

Soak the corn for an hour in salty water before wrapping in foil with a hefty slab of butter, then allow it to cook slowly on a cooler position near the open flame for up to an hour. Taking care to turn them and rearrange them as time goes by.

2. Fire Baked Potatoes

Russet potatoes pierced, slathered with butter or a soft herb cheese and then wrapped in foil cooked next to the corn is campfire stable anytime of year. The key is to look for smaller potatoes and rotate them frequently for even cooking.

3. Pork Chops

Select thinly sliced bone free chops and place them on a clean large hot rock (or pan) near the outside flame, and cook for 4 minutes on each side, or until done.  Finish them off by skewering them and adding them to the flame for a grilled result.

4. Hearty Chili

Arrange a large pot over the flame on a cooking tripod or rack and whip up your go to chili recipe.

5. Berry Crumble

Arrange a skillet over the flame on a cooking tripod or rack and add your favorite berries with a crumble topping, cook covered for up to an hour or until the juices of the berries start to burst through the topping.
