Gift Card Envelope

Gift cards or gift certificates are a popular option for nearly any special occasion - graduation parties, birthday parties for kids, holiday parties, bridal showers, etc. And though gift cards are super useful and appreciate, the drawback when giving them as a present is that you lose the fun of picking something out and wrapping it. In addition, the person on the receiving end often loses out on a pretty box to unwrap.
Although most stores have decorative gift card envelopes, the surprise is lost when the store's logo is on the outside. Specialty or handmade cases for cards or certificates are usually expensive, too.
Instead of spending money on a gift card holder, why not make your own personalized gift card envelopes? Sure, the guest of honor may not be fooled by what's inside of the envelope, but they won't know where the card or certificate is to until they do open it. Best of all, the person will appreciate the extra special touch this envelope lends since you handmade it on your own. It really is a great way to add a personal touch to a seemingly more impersonal gift.
- Craft foam, poster board or decorative paper
- 1" Glue Lines®/li>
Step 1: Use a gift card envelope template (I used Mary Beth Cryan's as a guide) or create your own. Trace it and cut it out from the foam, poster board or decorative paper. Fold the sides in first, and glue them in place with one or two 1" Glue Lines. Glue Lines® are strong adhesives (better than tape or glue) so one should be fine, but if your envelope is larger you may want to use two.
Step 2: Fold the bottom tab up and adhere in place with another 1"Glue Line.
Step 3: Slide the gift card into the envelope. If you want to seal the envelope try using a Removable Glue Dot® - these will keep the package closed, but you won't have a hard time removing the seal.
Step 4: Turn the envelope over and embellish as much as you like with cut pieces of foam, buttons, ribbon, glitter and/or permanent marker. We kept ours simple for this particular birthday gift for dad, but with Glue Dots you can pretty much adhere anything and it'll stick! So useful and easy to use!
