Costume Contest DIY Prize Ribbons

Host a Halloween costume competition at your next spooky shindig and gift the winners with these DIY prize ribbons!

You can't have a Halloween costume party without a costume contest!  You can make your own prize ribbons like we did to give out to each child or to the winning 2 or 3 costumes.

Put these DIY ribbons together in just a few easy steps using our tutorial. Once you get the hang of these ribbons you can create them for almost any theme or occasion. Make them all different using a mix of papers and ribbons.

  • Scrapbook paper cut into long strips about two inches wide.
  • Wide ribbon
  • Circle punch, or scissors to cut two different sizes of circles
  • Double sided tape and/or glue adhesives
  • Optional: Adhesive pins from the craft store

Start by folding your scrapbook strips into small accordion pleats.

Cut or punch large circles from scrapbook paper.

Create costume categories on your computer and print them out; cut or punch them out into circles. Note: these will be smaller than the scrapbook circles so they can be placed on top.

Once your strips are folded into accordion pleats, wrap it around to connect the two ends together. Secure using tape or glue adhesives.

Now push the outside of the circle down into the center to create a pinwheel effect.

This is the tricky part as the paper will want to pop up again and again. Have two larger circles plus glue adhesives ready so you can adhere a circle to each side and hold the pinwheel in place.

Use double sided tape to place the 'winner category' punched circle on top of the base circle.

Now tape the ribbon tails onto the back of the prize ribbon and attach the pin so kids can pin it onto their costume if they like.
