Handmade Mother's Day Cards for Kids: Purse Inspired Cards

Let your child be the designer! This purse is fun to make and your child will enjoy picking out the colors and embellishments to make it uniquely theirs or mom's.

Embellishments such as paper flowers, decorative brads, heart shapes
Sticky strip tape
Black fine tip marker
Corner rounder punch or small circular object to help guide you to round the bottom edges of the purse.
1 sheet (8 1/2 by 11 inch) solid color cardstock cut as follows:
purse body:  cut paper  6 3/4 by 9 1/2 inches
purse latch:  use scraps to cut 1 1/2 inch by 2 1/4 inch piece
tag for purse:  use scraps to cut 1 by 1 1/2 inch piece
1 sheet (8 1/2 by 11 inch) white cardstock cut as follows:
inside of purse:  cut paper 6 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches to write the message on
tag for purse:  use a scrap to cut 1 by 3/4 inch piece to glue onto the tag.
1 sheet floral or other designed scrapbook paper cut to 6 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches for front of purse.
1 piece of contrasting color scrapbook paper cut into a 1 by 6 1/2 inch strip for top edge of purse
1 inch circle or heart shape to decorate the latch.
8 inch piece of 1-inch wide ribbon for purse handle.

Step 1. Fold the 6 3/4 X 9 1/2 inch cardstock in half to form the 6 3/4 X 4 3/4 card. The fold will be at the top edge of the card, or purse.

Step 2. Using a corner punch or circle to guide you, round the 4 corners at the bottom of the card.

Step 3. Secure the ribbon handle to the top of the purse; about an inch down from the fold. A piece of Sticky-Strip tape will hold this firmly in place.

Step 4. Open the card up and glue the 6 1/2 X 4 1/2 inch white cardstock to the inside of the card purse for the child to write their message on.

Step 5. Set this aside while working with the designer paper.

Step 6. Using a corner punch, round the two bottom corners of the designer-paper piece--along the 6 1/2 inch length side.

Step 7. With edges even, glue the 1 X 6 1/2 inch strip to the top of the designer paper.

Step 8. Round the bottom corners of the purse latch--along the 1 1/2 inch side. Fold over about 1/2 inch on the top edge of the latch and tuck it over the decorative 1 inch border at the top of the purse; Glue latch in place.

Step 9. Now you are ready to glue the designer paper piece to the front of the cardstock purse. This will enclose the ribbon handle.  There will be a 1/4 inch border of the solid color cardstock all the way around the designer paper piece.

Step 10. Add embellishments. Kids can create a piece to add to the purse latch with shapes, fabric flowers, or decorative brads.

Step 11. Make the tag by gluing the 1 X 3/4 inch white cardstock to the 1 X 1 1/2 inch piece of colored cardstock. Then simply snip the corners off of the top of the tag, punch a hole and hang the tag around the handle of the purse with thin ribbon, twine or yarn.  The child can then write mom's name on the tag.

Step 12. Using the black fine-tip marker, have the child write a special note to their mom.
