Hawaiian Luau Decorations

Transform your outdoor space into a tropical paradise you'll want to keep up the entire season! For those of us who like to entertain outside during the warm weather months, a luau theme is always a great option. It's easy to create a cohesive thematic look and feel for a luau with staple items you'll reuse throughout the season.

Tiki Torches

Tiki torches are synonymous with a Hawaiian themed party. The torches can be used to line walkways or an outdoor party area for luaus in warm summer moths.

And if you're still looking to hula during the colder winter months, tiki torches can still be propped up against the wall as long as they remain unlit!

Add an extra special touch to your table with pretty bamboo shaped candles. They evoke the same tropical Hawaiian feel while offering a warm glow.

Either way, scatter plenty of tea light candles throughout the party area to create soft lighting throughout the luau.

Tribal Masks

Large tribal masks help add an authentic feel to a Hawaiian themed party. If you can find inexpensive wooden ones, go for it! Simply hang them strategically throughout your yard on fences, garage walls or from tent beams.

For an indoor party, you can temporarily store paintings in a closet and replace them with masks for the evening of the party.

If you can't get a hold of the wooden masks try making a few - we've seen masks made from paper mache, craft foam, cardstock and even fabric. Just go with what's easiest for you!

Palm Trees, Bamboo Sticks and Tropical Flowers

If you happen to have palm trees in your space, you're halfway there! For those of us who live further north though you can still create a tropical setting for your luau.

Palm tree leaves and other tropical greenery can be gotten at the local florist. Simply layer your table with these pieces, place them in thematic jars or under plates!

Add colorful tropical flowers to the center of your table for an eye-popping party centerpiece. Orchids and birds of paradise are ideal choices to compliment the Hawaii theme but can get pricey. Opt for less expensive blooms of any sort - just aim to get flat petaled flowers in bright colors like pink, orange, blue or yellow.

Bamboo sticks are also a fun option to consider - we like this look for a modern luau. Simply arrange bamboo in a tall clear vase with some glass rocks for a streamlined look!

Leis & Flip flops for Guests

Welcome the luau guests into your home by inviting them to kick of their shoes and relax.

Fill a bucket or box near the front door with economical pairs of rubber flip flops in various sizes.

As guests arrive, ask them to replace their shoes with a pair of comfy flip flops, and let them know that they can take the pair they choose home as a party favor.

Guests will love the gesture, and the removal of shoes also nods to the Japanese tradition that many Hawaiians follow. After your party guests have donned their colorful new flip flops, hand them a lei to wear throughout the luau as well.
