Holiday Drinking Games

Different approaches to making drinking a sport, include the ever-popular TV or movie games that call for taking shots when a key phrase is spoken; tolerance games that test the participants alcohol levels; and many, many others.

Vocal Game

As their name implies, vocal games are driven by spoken words. We love the idea of a game of Bouncing Ball, with a holiday twist. All you need are:

a few drinking buddies
your drink of choice (beer, liquor, wine)
an imaginary ball

Choose three buzz words, like Santa, Stocking, and Fruitcake, then assign actions to each word for the imaginary ball. For example:

Santa means the ball passes to the next player
Stocking means the ball skips the next player and passes to the following player
Fruitcake means the ball hits the wall and reverses direction.

Each person takes a turn by saying one of the buzz words. The trick is to keep up with the location of the imaginary ball. If anyone mistakes the location or errs in any way, a drink is served up to the loser.

Thinking Games

Our favorite thinking game is Roman Numerals. Players take turns saying the Roman numeral system in order, from I to XX, replacing key numbers with words. Play with a trio of names that can easily be converted to holiday words. Replace the original "poo," "bum" and "dickie" with holiday words like, ornament, tree and stocking.

For example:

I becomes ornament
V becomes tree
X becomes stocking

Everytime a player says their Roman Numeral without replacing the key numbers with the holiday words that player must take a drink.

Luck Games

Nothing can get you through a luck drinking game but, well, pure luck. To try one out during the holidays, try Shot Roulette (or be festive and call the game Reindeer Roulette).

Round up 4-6 players and place a shot glass in front of everyone but one.
Fill each glass except one with water, then fill the remaining glass with liquor.
The player left without a shot glass must leave the room while the 3-5 remaining players mix up their glasses.
Once the non-drinking player returns, everyone takes a shot and the non-drinking player must guess who took the liquor shot.
If she's correct, everyone takes a shot of liquor and another person is chosen as the odd-man-out.
If she's incorrect, she must take a liquor shot and the process continues until she guesses correctly.
