Housewarming Gift Giving Superstitions & Gift Ideas

Buying a new home is a big milestone and many homeowners mark the occasion with a housewarming party, inviting family and friends to celebrate the move-in.

Like a baby or bridal shower, it's customary for housewarming party guests to arrive at the party with a gift in hand to help get the new homeowners off on the right foot and ease the burden on their shoulders to get everything they might need to start their life in a new space.

If you've been invited to a housewarming and are wondering what an appropriate gift might be, consider the following superstitions when it comes to housewarming gifts!

Bad Housewarming Gifts to Give According to Superstition:

Knives/Scissor sets are a popular choice for housewarming registries, but beware! If you're gifting your friends with some spankin' new knives, make sure they give you a few coins in return. Superstition has it that a gift of knives can cut friendships in half, so it's customary for the recipient to "pay" for the gift with a few pennies, provided most often by the giver.

In Chinese culture giving a clock as a gift is taboo because the word for "clock" in Chinese sounds eerily similar to the word for "death" - so don't feel compelled to wrap a clock up in wrapping paper.

Any money holders you might gift to encourage your friends to save for a rainy day fund or home makeover is great, but be sure to pop a few dollars and coins in there to start it off otherwise you risk passing them some bad luck instead of good fortune!

Garden hoes aren't typical housewarming gifts, but if you do give a hoe to help stock the tool shed don't bring it inside. If you do so on accident, carry it out again, walking backwards to avoid bad luck. A better option? A broom! To sweep evil out of the house.

Best Housewarming Gifts to Give According to Superstition:

Pigs, Frogs, Horsehoes and Ladybugs are considered good luck, so any house essentials with one of these symbols on them are a win!

Plants don't just look great with any decor, they're a symbol of life and a potted plant gift will ensure life will thrive in the new home.

Follow this poem and make a big basket for the new homeowners:

Bread, so you never go hungry.

Wine, so your life is always sweet.

Salt, so there is always flavor in your life.

And a candle so you always have light.
