How to Make a Chalkboard Serving Tray

Chalkboard paint isn't just for your kid's wall. Savvy hostesses all over are slapping that paint on party essentials, like serving trays, taking them from ordinary to extraordinary with this DIY PARTY IDEA!

What's so great about chalkboard paint is its durability and versatility. Not only will a couple of coats on wood last you for celebrations galore, it's also so easy to incorporate your party or holiday theme into your look using chalk.

I had a couple of funky shaped cutting boards in the office that looked great in the store, but didn't work so well for slicing purposes. Instead of tossing them, Jaclyn and I got creative and applied a couple of chalkboard paint coats to one side of the boards and made transformed them into trays to display cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

At a recent cocktail party I had I used the trays - guests of course, loved it. They also enjoyed the matching coasters I painted and customized with each of their names.

Like I said, chalkboard paint is so versatile. After my party, I ran the trays under some warm water to clean, then reused them for another special occasion. On Valentine's Day morning I surprised my hubby with breakfast served on the tray - complete with a love note written on the board itself.

Give these chalkboard serving trays a try at your next celebration!

  • Wooden serving tray (or large cutting board)
  • Chalkboard paint (can be found at your local hardware store)
  • Sponge brush
  • Newspaper
  • Chalk

Make sure your wooden surface you will be painting is clean and dry. Lie it atop a newspaper to prevent a mess.

Using your sponge brush, apply the chalkboard paint in even strokes. The first coat should be dry within 30 minutes and you will probably need another to completely cover your wood.

Once you have an evenly covered surface, allow to dry for 2 days. After that, the paint will be safe to rinse.

Use to display or serve bites and drinks at your next celebration - complete with chalk written notes, too!
