How to Make a Silhouette Pumpkin Decoration

Not a fan of cleaning up sticky pumpkin guts? Then this Halloween craft is for you! These silhouette pumpkins make the perfect Halloween decoration, no pumpkin gutting required.

If you don’t know how to make a silhouette in Photoshop, simply print out a large side profile photo and cut around the image to make a silhouette. A tip for profile photos is to make sure your subject’s mouth is closed before taking their photo.

This project takes only a few minutes to complete and it looks like you spent several hours hand painting these pumpkins. A great feature of adhesive vinyl is that you can easily remove it and use the pumpkins for something else if you need to. I made a silhouette pumpkin for each of my family members and I can’t wait to put my little pumpkin patch on display this year!

  • Pumpkin (fake or real)
  • Adhesive Black Vinyl
  • Scissors
  • Side Profile Photo (at least 8x10)
  • Double Sided Tape or Glue

Step 1: Take a photo of your family member’s side profile and print it out. Depending on your pumpkin size, print photo as an 8x10 or 11x14 size.

Step 2: Using double sided tape or glue, adhere the photo to the backside of the adhesive vinyl and cut out the silhouette.

Step 3: Peel off the sticky backing of the adhesive and adhere to the pumpkin, smoothing out the wrinkles as best as you can. There will still be some wrinkles, but you can start smoothing the facial features first so they have the least wrinkles.

Step 4: Repeat for each family member and use as Halloween decorations around your home, both inside and out!
