How to Turn Fall Foods into Seasonal Centerpieces

The next time you head to the super market this fall, don't just scope out the perfect butternut squash for your homemade soup - find one that's perfect for turning into a centerpiece for your table, too!

Getting creative with nature's seasonal harvest is always fun, but there's something special to be said about doing this in the fall when natural decor is top of mind.

Celebrations.com Expert Julie Mulligan shared these three easy craft ideas with us and we can't think of anything better to adorn our Thanksgiving table or the stairs in our entryway this fall.

Using fruits and veggies that are in season is best, but so too is finding the ideal vessel for your flowers. She found artichoke, butternut squash and asparagus are ideal options.


DIY Artichoke Vase

Bright green artichokes are great because of how sturdy they are and how well they'll hold up over a period of time.



We love how Julie pairs the hard lines and thick green outside of her artichoke with softer, more wild blooms. Best of all, the Dahlias are in season and the lavender sprigs add both a pop of color and fresh scent to the mix.



First cut the bottom of the artichoke so that it sits flat.

Next, separate the topmost petals on the artichoke and remove the heart, which you can eat if you'd like!

Then, place either a shot glass or glass votive holder into the cavity of the artichoke you just created and fill with water or a piece of wet floral foam cut to size to keep your flowers fresh!


DIY Butternut Squash Vase

Julie's favorite vegetable to turn into a centerpiece is the butternut squash and we have to agree. It's hard not to admire the intrigue this simple veggie brings to your table.



The squash's shape and texture resemble a ceramic container and works well with just about any color scheme.



First, make sure you choose a squash that will stand up straight - you can cut a thin part of the bottom off to help level, but don't cut too much.

Then cut off the top of it and carefully scrape out as much of the inside as you can. Just be careful so you don't poke through the skin of it.

Finally, simply fill with water directly if you want to and place your blooms in or cut a piece of floral foam to fit inside, soak it and place sturdier flowers in that and fill.


DIY Asparagus Vase

Last but not least, asparagus makes for a really easy natural vase. There's no real work to making this last centerpiece!




Simply put the rubber band your asparagus usually comes wrapped in around a glass vase and slip the veggies in between the glass and band.

Continue until the entire glass is covered, then hide the rubber band with a festive ribbon to match your decor!
