How to Wear White After Labor Day

“No white after Labor Day” is a rule so old-fashioned, no one even knows exactly where it came from. It may have been started by early 1900s fashion magazines, which were all headquartered in New York City, according to one theory published in Time magazine. Fashion editors wouldn't dear wear their breezy bright summer whites into fall, which is a notoriously rainy and muddy season in the Northeast. Their decisions in the pages of the glossy mags set the tone for the rest of the country.

Regardless, rules are meant to be broken, and there’s something freeing about wearing the “forbidden” color after the unofficial end of summer. So when you plan your outfit for hosting an upcoming fall party or attending a back-to-school bash, don’t forget about your crisp white pants, bright dresses and chic skirts. White is the new black this season, so take a look at our favorite fall outfits and gather some inspiration for your cold weather wardrobe. Basically, there’s no wrong way to wear your whites in the fall -- just don’t forget your stain removing pen.

White Jeans Paired with Riding Boots and a Sweater

Your white jeans are the perfect base for a sleek fall outfit. Just throw on a pair of tall riding boots and a sweater, and you’re ready for the chilly weather. Bethany of B SOUP took her Citizen of humanity white jeans and topped them off with a men’s sweater from ASOS, and a pretty floral button-up from Boundary and Co. The mix-and-match of textures and patterns go great with the white, and the tall suede boots from Vince Camuto make for the perfect autumn outfit!

Jean Jacket Over White Dress and Tights

Even your white summer dresses can make a chic statement come fall. Pair your white sundress with a pair of black tights and a denim jacket for a stylish autumn outfit that’s perfect for work, or a night out. This ensemble featured on The Berry shows the tights under a pair of Mary Jane platforms, but we love boots or booties as well.

Wedge Boots and a Vest with White Jeans

The easiest way to "fallify" (I just made that word up) your white pants is with seasonal footwear. Throw on a pair of leather ankle boots like Nichole from A Type of Style, and you’re already ready for autumn. She paired her outfit with a chic leather vest, and black leather T-shirt – the short sleeves still work for the warmer fall days.

She also broke another made-up rule that has no real clout – never mixing black and brown. Not true! They’re both classic neutrals, and look chic together.

Oxfords and a Flowy Blouse with White Slacks

Trading in your summer sandals for a pair of Oxfords is an easy way to transition into fall, and guess what? Oxfords look great with white slacks, too. Fashion stylists Emily Current and Meritt Elliot pinned this look of a model who pulled off breezy white pants with a pair of brown or tan leather Oxfords. Sleek and chic!

Denim on Demin With Booties

Chambray button-ups are here to stay, especially into the fall season. The light fabric is perfect for the warmer fall days, and the sleeves can be worn long or rolled up above your elbows. Pair your chambray and sleek white jeans with a pair of ankle booties like Bethany Struble did on her blog Snakes Nest. It makes for a clean, casual fall outfit.

White Skirt with a Bold Blouse and Pumps

White is the new black for fall, so says Jacey Duprie of Damsel in Dior. She paired this white J. Crew skirt with a bold cobalt blouse and blue strappy pumps for a sophisticated early fall look that’s perfect for work and after-office drinks.
