International Friendship Day: 10 Fabulous & Frugal Ways to Celebrate For $10 or Less

Our friends are basically like family, except we get to pick and choose them. This usually means they are funnier than your Uncle Max, less judgemental than your stepmom and better listeners than your older sister — and they deserve to be honored on International Friendship Day on Aug. 3.

Lucky for us, Friendship Day falls right in the heart of summer. Spend the first Sunday of August with your closest friends, and enjoy that quality time together outside, at a local pool or watching a summer blockbuster. You can also make some delicious treats or DIY gifts, none of which cost more than $10!

Take a look at our favorite ideas to celebrate your BFFs. Their friendship is priceless, and your celebrations shouldn't break the bank, either.

1. Plan a Game of Ultimate Frisbee

If it's not too scorching hot, grab a Frisbee from the local dollar store and gather up some pals for a game of Ultimate Frisbee. The rules are simple (you can find how to play at USAUltimate.org), and add some fun and competition to just the standard throwing the Frisbee around.

2. Take a Hike

Assuming you live near some walking trails, then gather up your BBFs for a morning hike (before it gets too hot). Enjoy nature and get in some exercise. Plus, this makes for some perfect photo opps for Instagram — and it's free. (Even the ladies of MTV's hit show The HIlls loved their hikes!)

3. Make a Splash at the Local Swimming Pool

If you're lucky enough to live near a free pool (or have a friend who has one!), then Aug. 3 is the time to go. Most city pools just charge a few dollars to get in. Spend the day splashing around and soaking up the rays at the local pool, and play these fun Pool Party Games for Adults

4. Find Free Live Music in the Park

Here in New York City, there are so many city parks that offer free live music in the summer. Check your local parks website for a schedule, and see if there will be some tunes playing on Aug. 3! Grab a light blanket, some snacks and enjoy live music while it's still summer.

5. Catch a Summer Matinee

August is usually the dog days of summer, which means high temps and high humidity. If the idea of being outside just makes you sweat thinking about it, then hit the movie theaters instead. Most theaters have cheaper tickets during early matinee shows. Check the schedule for August 3, and catch that summer blockbuster you've been dying to see at a discount. (And don't tell the movie theater we told you this, but we're all about sneaking in your own snacks).

6. Send a Free eCard

International Friendship Day was allegedly started by Hallmark in 1919 to get people to send cards to their friends (surprise, surprise). Although it didn't take off as well as, say, Valentine's Day, you can still make your friends' day by sending a free eCard. Check out our Just Because card collection for some fun digital cards!

7. Make a Homemade Wine Spritzer

If you enjoy a bottle of bubbly with your friends, then this summery White Wine Blackberry Spritzer is perfect. Hit up your local Trader Joe's or wine shop  for some Three Buck Chuck (it's actually good!), and add in club soda and fresh blackberries. Bring the supplies over to your pals for a surprise happy hour or day drink!

8. Bake Them Homemade Treats

Instead of standard cookies or brownies, whip up a batch of Watermelon Rice Krispie Treats. They are just as easy to make as traditional Rice Krispie Treats, but just have some extra food coloring! These adorable bars make the perfect summer treat.

9. Send a $5 Cookie Card

No time to bake? Send your friend a smile with a $5 Cookie Card from Cheryl's. Browse their collection of cookie cards, and pick out the perfect one for your pal. This is especially a good idea if your friends live out of town.

10.  Give a DIY Citrus Scrub

Surprise your pals by giving them something homemade and useful! This refreshing Homemade Citrus Salt Scrub exfoliates away all of your dead summer skin, but can be made with ingredients your probably already have in your kitchen. With just some olive (or coconut) oil, salt, and fresh lemon juice, you have a sweet summer scrub your friends will love. Put it in a small mason jar and make your own labels!
