Korean 1st Birthday Decor Ideas

In the Korean community, celebrating a child’s 1st birthday is a monumental event for families.

A Korean first birthday, also known as a dol or doljianchi, is a popular event that requires a lot of thought and planning to make the day special. Parents go to great lengths to ensure their baby’s 1st birthday goes off without a hitch.

Here are few ideas to give you some decor inspiration if you are planning a dol or doljianchi for your baby.

What Lies Ahead?

One of the main elements of a dol or doljianchi is the fortune telling stage of the party. Parents will place a series of objects in front of the child who then selects one of the objects. This signifies what the future lies ahead for the baby based on what he or she chooses.

Traditionally parents laid out things like money or books. But as times change, so does the objects such as calculator (they’ll become a banker!) or a piece of chalk (they’ll become a teacher!).

Whatever you decide, assemble everything on a table to create a presentation like this "dol table" featured on Kokoliving.com.

Decorate With Tradition in Mind

Parents will dress up their baby with traditional clothing that's vibrant and full of color. Why not take those elements an incorporate them into your decor?

Food Cylinder Ideas

If you are hosting a doljanchi for your daughter, you will need to create food towers that are tall to symbolize the abundance of food.

Postcards from Ohama shows you some creative ways to display these towers as well as the best ways to make them. Apparently paper towel rolls work best!

As east and west traditions merge, so do the ways these parties are conducted. From intimate gatherings in the home with close friends to all out extravaganzas planned in banquet halls, Korean 1st birthdays are an elaborate event to plan. Incorporate tradition along with modern touches and you'll have a party that will balance both worlds beautifully.
