Learn While You Play: ABC Rocks Craft for Kids

I love crafting projects that are also learning projects, and this very simple crafting project is just that. Using river rocks found on a fall walk, we turned a few dirty stones into a pile of alphabet letters that have a million and one uses that everyone in the family can enjoy.

The only part of this craft that requires adult supervision is the spray painting step, but it is such a small aspect of this project that your children will hardly notice.

Each of my 3 children created their own letter collection that we are using to host spelling tests, play hang man and give our youngest an opportunity to become more familiar with his letters.

  • At least 26 flat surfaced stones (we collected ours from our back yard, but you can also buy them)
  • Acrylic sealant
  • Vinyl Letters
  • A cardboard box to use as the painting/drying station

Step 1: Collect your stones, and then wash and dry them before spaying them with colored paint.

Step 2: Allow the paint to dry, and then turn them over and repeat the process, until each stone is fully coated and dry.

Step 3: Gently peel away the vinyl lettering and position each letter on its own stone.

Step 4: Once the lettering is in place, spay the sealant across the top of each letter to further secure it to the stone.
