Meet the Designer: Nicholas Bell

Take a look at our latest interview with Celebrations Designer, Nicholas Bell.

Could you tell us about your work? What inspires you?

The main focus of my work is to capture scenes of dramatic mood and atmosphere in monochrome. My subject matter varies but I definitely have an affinity for the natural world and it is where I feel at my creative best. Although my images are mainly of the landscape, they are very much inspired by emotion. I photograph scenes based more on how I respond to them emotionally rather than the particular subject matter or the mere esthetic.  For me, it is important to feel connected to a scene and then be able to covey that feeling through the photograph.Inspiration comes to me in many different forms.  A lot of my work is actually influenced and inspired by the music that I’m listening to at the time. Other times it is purely visual and can be something as simple as a unique quality of light.

How would you describe the style of most of your designs?

I’m not sure I could categorize them as any particular style. I just hope that they are expressive and impactful in some way.

How has your art changed over the years? Do you have any predictions of what it will be like in the future?

My work has evolved quite a bit. Although I’ve always preferred black and white photography over color, I spent my first few years shooting in color. As time went by and I learned to see more in terms of light, shadow and contrast, I made the move to black and white and have been working this way for about ten years. As far as style, I have been veering more towards minimalism lately and really look forward to exploring it more. I think it would be very difficult to predict what my work will be like in the future. I never try to force anything, I just let the work evolve naturally as my creativity and vision grows.

What made you decide to work with

I just love the concept and the creativity. Celebrations has so many fantastic artists and designers. It truly is inspiring and great company to be in.

If you had to choose a favorite invite you have made, what would it be?

Tranquil Lake” – I like the simplicity of it and think the composition worked really well for incorporating text.

What benefits have you found the Internet has for your work?

Without a doubt it is the exposure.  Being able to have my work seen all over the world has been invaluable and provided many opportunities that otherwise never would have been. Another great benefit has been the challenge of not getting lost in the crowd.  It really requires a lot of work and vigilance to maintain good visibility. For me this has been a great motivator to work harder and more creatively in promoting my work.
