Music Monday: VMA-Inspired Playlist for a Fall Party

The 2013 MTV VMAs were full of surprises. Some great (‘NSYNC reuniting for a whole 60 seconds), some good (Katy Perry performing under the Brooklyn Bridge) and some downright disturbing (Miley Cyrus twerking on Robin Thicke and stripping in front of giant Teddy bears).

Publicity stunts aside, the Aug. 25 show in Brooklyn gave us a look back on all of the biggest hits of the year, and also a sneak peak of new tunes that will soon be all over the airwaves.

Some of these jams came in the form of live performances, including Kanye West’s dark and passionate rendition of “Blood on the Leaves.” Lady GaGa proved she’s still a musical force to be reckoned with when she opened the show with a pop art-inspired performance of her new single “Applause,” and Bruno Mars slowed things down with his song “Gorilla.”

And even though I spent most of the VMAs pre-show absolutely confused – who are these preteens and why aren’t they wearing clothes? – there was a good amount of music nominated for awards that appealed to audiences of all ages. This year, there was a favorable mix of hip hop, pop, rock, indie and house music spread out among all of the genres.

Last night’s show inspired me to create a playlist of all the music that was performed and nominated for a back-to-school or fall party. Although some of these songs have explicit lyrics, there is enough musical variety to appeal to even the pickiest crowd.
