Perfect Day of Pottery

My family has never really been a crafty bunch. Any family time spent together is usually going to see a movie or grabbing dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. I hadn't seen them in over a month so I decided to pay them a visit my first free Sunday. With perfect timing, I made it there just in time for breakfast.

Since my visits were scarce, we decided to do something exciting together, which turned out to be ice skating. It took my family a good deal of convincing, but I agreed to give it a shot. Just as we were readying to leave, though, the weather took a sharp turn for the dark and rainy - and I have to say, I wasn't the least bit upset!

We needed a good, relaxing activity that was only a short drive away, so I suggested checking out the local pottery-painting studio. Not surprisingly, it was my brother who needed convincing this time. Since I had agreed to the ice-skating, he agreed to the pottery painting.

When we arrived, the studio was filled with parents and their young children (under the age of 5). I thought I definitely had a chance of producing some impressive artwork compared to my competition. The rules were as follows: pick a pottery piece to paint and get creative. Simple enough!

The studio's selection varied from tiny coasters to extravagant garden ornaments and kitchen supplies. My mother chose a beautiful ceramic tea server, and I chose a wine glass holder to complement my family's wine rack.

My brother’s choice was even perfect for him. He loves to bake, so his cake plate and cover was no surprise. Better yet, the design even suited him - the cake cover was shaped like a large chunk of cheese, accented with an adorable mouse sitting at the top.

Al that was left was to pick our first 7 colors. You have unlimited access to all the paints, but an artist has got to start somewhere!

We ended up spending almost 4 hours at the studio! This may have been a bicker-free record for us.

It was a unanimous agreement that this activity was a success.

This is definitely a fun, relaxing activity that can bring any family together. My recommendation for someone planning a visit to the pottery studio? Wear your oldest clothes. You never know when your brother is going to decide to paint a new design on your shirt!
