Pumpkin Quilled Paper Invitation

The technique of swirled paper, as shown by the pumpkin design on the front of this card, is called "quilling."

This paper craft is performed simply by twirling strips of paper around a toothpick or a pencil and then assembling the quilled paper on to the card.

1 sheet each orange, black, and green cardstock (8 1/2 x 11 inches)
Paper trimmer
Double-stick tape
Black glitter letter stickers
White glue

Cut orange cardstock to 5 x 10 inches. Fold cardstock in half to make a 5-inch square card or you can make cards sized to fit your envelopes.

Tip: Use a bone folder along the folded edge to make a nice flat crease.

Note: This card opens from the bottom up.

Cut the black cardstock to a 4-inch square and use double-stick tape to attach it to the front of the card. Position the square toward the bottom edge of the card so you'll have room at the top for the letter stickers that spell "PARTY."

Cut 3 strips of paper into these lengths: 1/2-inch wide x 12-inch long strip of orange cardstock; 1/2-inch wide x 2-inch long strip green cardstock; 1/2-inch wide x 3-inch long strip black cardstock.

Tip: Use a paper trimmer for super straight cuts.

Fold the strips in half lengthwise making them 1/4-inch wide. Tape an end of the orange strip to a pencil, or your quilling tool, and wind the strip into a loose coil. Remove the taped end from the pencil and form the paper strip into the pumpkin design on the front of the card in the photo.

Dip the tip of a toothpick in white glue and apply glue to the end of the strip that is on the inside of the pumpkin and touches the other end of the strip about 1-inch from the curled end on the pumpkin's right side (refer to the photo). Pinch strip ends together where they meet to keep the pumpkin closed.

Use glue on the underside of the pumpkin to attach it in the center of the black paper square on the front of the card.

Create the pumpkin's green stem by folding the green strip as shown in the photo.

Make the pumpkin's eye by folding the black strip into a triangle shape and use glue on the ends to keep it closed. Use glue on the underside of the stem and eye to attach them to the black cardstock and pumpkin in the position they are in the photo.

Spell out "PARTY" or whatever phrase you like using black glitter letter stickers above the black square on the orange card.

Write the party information inside the card and send to your Halloween invites!
