Rainbow 1st Birthday Decorations

Throw a birthday party busting with color for your baby's 1st birthday with these rainbow themed decoration ideas! Bright colors are a wonderful decor scheme for a 1st birthday party for boys or girls. Not only does it make decorating the space easier and less expensive, rainbow shades are guaranteed to make your birthday celebration happy and bright, no matter where you host it.

For my grandson's 1st birthday, we invited close family over for a casual celebration that mirrored the big milestone. The party started outdoors in the yard, but then moved inside once some unexpected weather made an appearance.

Inspired by the colorful ribbons on our first birthday party invitation, we created a fun, rainbow colored banner to string across the yard.

Coordinating stickers from Pear Tree Greetings were placed randomly on the banner to announce that our baby was celebrating the big number 1! And the best news? We used sturdy plastic index dividers to make our banner, so it was waterproof when the usual afternoon rain showers came! It stayed fresh even when we got a bit wet.

We invited friends and family for an afternoon of munchies, indoor games, and birthday cake. Colorful stuffed animals and toys made the perfect centerpieces for our tables and they doubled as presents for our 1-year-old. They were an inexpensive way to decorate the party area, and perfectly suitable for a 1-year old's brightly colored birthday party.

Like the rainbow of ribbons on our invitation, party guests enjoyed a "rainbow" of munchies and dips and kept coming back for more. We filled colorful platters with fresh strawberries, baby carrots, corn chips, celery and grapes.

Bowls of strawberry yogurt dip and ranch dip were spooned onto plates for a little extra yumminess. It was the perfect afternoon snack as guests mingled, presents were opened, kids played, and we all awaited the birthday cake.

Is that a red alligator in the strawberries? For a little extra whimsy, we placed colorful bath toys on each of the platters. The kids loved it!

We kept the color theme going with the party drinks, too. Guests helped themselves to an offering of assorted fruit drinks.

Time for some birthday cake! Our fruity ice cream cake was a hit. Layers of fruit, angel food cake and ice cream created beautiful ribbons of color in each slice.

The favorite spot in the house was the Colorful Candy Bar. Again, we mimicked our party invitation with a myriad of colorful buckets, tied with ribbons, and filled full of color-coordinated candies, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, and homemade crayons.

As guests left the party they stopped by the Candy Bar and filled their own bag with goodies of every color.

We ordered a custom-made wooden number 1 from the Etsy shop Dwelling and it was the perfect photo prop for our birthday boy. We asked Dwelling to create the number to match our invitation and color scheme, and we got it...a fun polka dot number 1, in all of our cheery colors, tied up with a ribbon.

Party favors that shout, "Happy First Birthday!" were a hit with our guests. We purchased clear favor boxes from the wedding section of our craft store, then we filled the little boxes with candies of every color, tied them with a multi-colored striped ribbon and added coordinating birthday stickers.
