Seating Arrangements for a Bohemian Party

For a bohemian summer party, you’ll want to create a casual outdoor dining area that suits the non-fussy, artistic, and eclectic style.

Layered rugs and low, comfortable seating with lots of pillows are crucial for achieving the comfortable bohemian look. You’ll have your guests lounge on the ground, gathered around the table for a dinner atmosphere that is beautiful and artistic, yet feels effortless and relaxed.

Create a simple food and drink serving area with stacked shipping pallets and layered textiles.  Bohemian style is supposed to be informal and easygoing, so you can probably put the whole look together without spending any money—just shop your house for items to use!

  • Assorted rugs & blankets
  • Large coffee table
  • Shipping pallets
  • Floor cushions & throw pillows
  • Patterned textiles

Step 1: In front of your bohemian backdrop, layer a few rugs in a random, overlapping grouping. Feel free to mix styles, colors, and patterns, but there should be at least one cohesive element. For example, I used a modern geometric rug, an ethnic tapestry, and a natural fiber rug, but they coordinate because of the neutral palette.

Step 2: Set up a large coffee table on the rugs to create a low dinner table.  Cover the table with an interesting tablecloth or another patterned textile. If your tablecloth is especially bold or graphic, layer a solid table runner over top, or vice versa. I used a graphic, deep pink tribal blanket that has a global look and placed a solid bamboo table runner on top.

Step 3: Surround the table with colorful floor cushions and pillows for guests to lounge on while dining. The more, the merrier!

Step 4: Create a drink & food serving station by layering more rugs or patterned blankets.  Stack a few shipping pallets to make another low table and drape textiles over top.

You’re now ready to bring in colorful, eclectic table settings and put together a bohemian style centerpiece.
