Simple Spider Cupcakes for Halloween

Decorating your Halloween cupcakes to resemble a spider and its web is easy with these helpful tips.

Use festive cupcake wrappers or switch up the color of the spider "web" to fit your theme! Of course, if your theme is just "Halloween", any dark or creepy accent will do.

Add a little something extra to these simple spider web cupcakes by adding the look of a peeking spider. Or, feel free to add some plastic spiders - just be sure not to use the real thing!

Plastic spider rings seem to be a fan favorite - they add that spooky element to the dish and the kids can rinse them off and sport their new Halloween jewelry.

Display these creepy and crawly cupcakes alongside one of our festive kid-friendly Halloween drinks . We recommend using special ice cube trays to make fun shaped ice cubes that the kids will love. And when all else fails, dropping a few edible eyeballs in the punch bowls always makes for some good conversation - or entertainment for the adults who got stuck with baby sitter duty.

1 boxed cake mix (any flavor), prepared as cupcakes, cooked and cooled
1 can vanilla frosting
Purple or black food coloring
Brown or black chocolate-coated candies
Red candy pen and/or decorative gel
Sandwich baggie or pastry bag fitted with small round tip

Prepare cupcakes as directed on package, OR try making them as Soda Cupcakes.

Take 2-3 tablespoons of vanilla frosting and place in a small bowl. Set aside.

Frost cooled cupcakes with remaining vanilla frosting.

Take the small bowl of reserved frosting and add purple or black food coloring until desired shade is achieved.

Place dyed frosting into the bottom corner of a sandwich baggie (or pastry bag) and snip a very small tip off of the corner of it.

Pipe thin, concentric circles about 1cm apart over top of frosted cupcake.

Beginning with the center, gently pull a toothpick through circles toward edges. Wipe toothpick clean and repeat to complete the spider web pattern.

Insert chocolate-coated candy into center of spider web and use red candy pen to give the spider two red eyes.
