Solar Crayons Summer Craft for Kids

Let the kids channel their inner artists and expand their mind by making solar crayons! This summer craft for kids is not only fun but educational, too.

Are you looking for a fun activity for a hot summer day? Rather than plopping them in front of the TV, let the kids conduct a little experiment with the power of the summer sun as they create their own solar crayons!

Children enjoy every part of this summertime activity. They watch as the heat from the sun melts and molds their crayons together, and then they check in on the process with anticipation, waiting for their solar crayons to be ready. It's a great way to save and reuse broken crayons, which is another wond

erful lesson for the kids! So it’s not just a craft project, but also an exercise in recycling.

Supplies
  • Mini-muffin pan or other tin
  • Broken pieces of crayons
Directions

Step 1: Remove the paper wrappers from all broken crayon pieces, then place them in the cups of a mini-muffin pan. (You can also use other molds—rubber ice cube trays in fun shapes like stars, for example, can create some unique crayons for your kids!) We placed warm colors and cool colors together. The solar process will be quicker if the crayons are in smaller pieces, and it's easy to cut the pieces smaller with a serrated knife.

Step 2: Place the crayon-filled muffin tin outdoors in a place that gets sun all day. This activity is best done in the morning, so that you don’t run out of sunlight.

Step 3: When the kids alert you that the crayons have all melted, bring the tin in and let the crayons cool. You can pop the tin in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.

Step 4: Insert a knife into the edge of the crayon to loosen and dislodge it.  Then turn the pan upside down and pop the solar crayons out of the tin.  The kids will be ready to color with their customized, solar crayons!
