Spike Your Food with Coffee & Tea

Infuse your food with coffee and tea for some buzzing extra flavor!

After attending this year’s Coffee and Tea Festival, I picked up a few tips and inspirations for making tasty menu items infused with coffee and tea. Here, a few of those lessons so you, too, can get caffeinated in the kitchen!

Tea and Grains

When I first heard this recipe idea I was ready to just toss it without trying. That is, until we were given samples of rice cooked in green tea.

This was definitely an eye-opener, not to mention palate-opener, for me. The tea flavor wasn’t overpowering and it added a hint of freshness to the rice. Plus, it’s a great way to get all the vitamins and antioxidants found in tea into your dish and body without having to sip it.

The lesson here? Any time you need to use water (cooking your rice, boiling the pasta), throw a few tea bags in for a subtle, but rich flavor.

Spiked Spreads

You may think your spreads are tasty enough, but that’s only because you haven’t had them spiked with tea yet! Add some tasty green tea to your cream cheese for a delicious bread spread, or add some fruit teas for a scrumptiously enhanced spread to serve with jam. And of course, finish off your dishes with a nice steaming cup of your favorite brew.

Coffee and Cake

For anyone who hasn’t tried adding a few scoops of coffee into your favorite brownie or cake recipe, you are missing out! If you’re feeling risqué, use flavors like chocolate or vanilla coffee to add that extra hint of indulgence to your dessert.

Caffeine Infused Frosting

It’s a not-so-well-kept secret that frosting can make pretty much anything taste like heaven. Many of us probably just buy our favorite frosting flavor at our local supermarket, but after getting inspired to put tea in my frosting, I’ll never buy pre-made again! Instead of using a basic liquid for your frosting recipes, add some tea bags to the equation. Chocolate or vanilla tea are an obvious solution, but you can always get more creative by using green teas or even fruit and berry flavored teas. Imagine a raspberry tea frosting on a chocolate cupcake? Just the thought of it is making my mouth water!

And of course any secret snack fiend knows, frosting is great with salty snacks like pretzels, too.
