As a kid, I thought getting a gift for mom on Mother’s Day was cake. Who doesn’t need a paperweight with a picture of me in it?
Getting older, it’s not so easy. As an adult starting my own family, I actually realize and appreciate what my mom truly did, does and will always do for me, my sister, my now husband and anyone else who comes along.
Every year now, I try hard to get creative and gift mom with a small token that says – “this is by no means enough, but it’s a small way I can say thanks for it all and I love you”.
Last Mother’s Day I got crafty with this DIY beaded vase idea Celebrations shared a few years ago. My mom adored it and it’s made a fine centerpiece for many a summer celebration since. It took only an hour to make, and was totally budget-friendly, but the handmade touch made it priceless to mom.
A few years back, while wandering around the South Street Seaport in downtown Manhattan, I made an amazing discovery at a little cart – handmade earrings with real flowers preserved inside them. No two earrings, even the pair, were identical. I had to get mom a pair!
Other gifts I’ve gotten mom include gift certificates to her nail salon, a kitchen mitt filled with lots of fun gadgets she’d never buy herself and homemade treats complete with card.
So, this year, I ran into dilemma. What to get Mom? Running through past presents I realized I’d never taken a real “personalize” approach. So, I hit the ground running with that idea and came across way too many photo frames, even more customized mugs and a few engraved cases.
When it looked like I’d be starting back at square one, I discovered the new personalized vases from 1-800-Flowers.com. I ordered one immediately – here’s why:
Flowers and Mother’s Day go hand-in-hand. My mom loves flowers as much as any other mom does, but unlike other arrangements I’d seen this was super customized with a very special photo that lasted long after the flowers would.
You see, the photo you personalize with the arrangement comes on special waterproof paper. It literally sits in the vase with the water. The ink doesn’t run, and when you remove the photo, you simply pat it dry and can use it however you’d like. Mom has tons of frames and this would fit any of them perfectly!
Aside from that, she could use the clear glass vase for everyday without worrying over it being branded Mother’s Day.
If that wasn’t enough, the actual personalization process was beyond easy. 1-800-Flowers.com lets you sign in with Facebook, so if you’ve got a photo in your library you can literally click, and BAM! It’s there.
I got a bit more creative and made a collage in my photo editor program using photos of both my sister and I. It took an extra half hour or so, but I know Mom will love it.
Just like clicking with Facebook, I clicked browse, located the file name on my computer and added it to the order in just a few seconds.
Since my collage was the big attraction I skipped the additional customization part 1-800-Flowers.com offers. However, I did look through and was impressed. There’s an assortment of Mother’s Day themed backgrounds and customized message options you can use to personalize the vase even more. Dads with young children could have a field day with this for Mom.
Mom’s guaranteed to love any gift I give her, but this year, she was truly touched. It’s a gift that gives in so many ways – from the smile she had seeing the flowers, to the bigger smile and a few tears glistening in her eyes when she saw the vase they were displayed in to the photo she can hold onto, it was a truly personalized gift she’ll have for years to come.
What are some personalized gifts you’ve given mom that she’s loved? I’ll need ideas for next year!
