Summer Nature Journal Craft for Kids

Provide materials for your children to create their own Nature Journals, and they'll spend hours exploring the intricacies of nature and expressing their observations through art and writing. This is a wonderful activity for the very beginning of summer because it keeps on giving—your children can come back to it again and again, as they explore the outdoors all season long!

We found some great little journals with blank pages and then simply provided the kids with some fun stickers to personalize their cover.  Our first mission was to go bug hunting, so we created a few fingerprint bugs in our journals before the bug hunt began.

There are many ways for kids to organize their nature journals. Kids might want to create an ABC Nature Journal, representing what they observe in alphabetical order. Or maybe they want to organize it by color – the possibilities are endless with just a little creativity! Encourage them to really think deeply about what’s happening around them, and tell them to use their journals to record what they see and what they wonder about.

Kids can also use their journals to collect little of pieces of nature, turning their notebooks into a little nature scrapbook. Every time they find a unique feather or leaf, have them tape it to a page, or teach them how to make leaf or bark rubbings. You can take these activities one step further once they’re home, using online resources to teach them about what they have found!

Make sure they hold on to these journals in a safe spot. Once school time comes back around, they can bring it into class for show and tell and share all of the exciting adventure they went on!

Another fun idea is to give kids a nature scavenger hunt list and send them to the backyard with their journals in hand. In the list, you can include both objects that they can collect, like dandelions or flowers, and things they can merely observe and write about, like birds or butterflies. There are lots of possibilities for your budding scientists, artists and naturalists!
