Tips to Create a Lounge for your Party

Lounge spaces have become a big trend at parties. Whether you're having a party at your house, or even at an outside venue, you always want to make sure that you create a lounge space where your guests are comfortable and can relax and hang out during your party.

Once you have decided on the type of atmosphere you want to create for your party, constructing your own lounge space at your house is very easy and always a great success at all parties!

Rearrange the seating in vignettes of four to six, six to eight, and eight to ten. This gives guests a comfortable place to relax, mingle and meet new people.

Bring indoor furniture outside. Give a kitchen chair or living room couch a makeover by draping it with white sheets or a playful fabric like terry cloth!

Create the ultimate lounge space by bringing out a bed and loading it up with pillows.

Use patterned rugs or large bath mats to lay out a soft foundation for sitting on the ground. Prop fluffy pillows throughout the party space.

Hide existing artwork and wall color by hanging sheer fabric from the ceiling to the floor. This creates a blank canvas for your decorating scheme.

Move away from anything breakable or personable. You don't want to risk having anything broken during your party by putting your guests in a situation where this could occur.

Don't put anything too high that will block people's eyes. Your guests want to be able to freely converse with one another without having something hinder their vision.

Add simple accents like silk dupioni pillows in a variety of shades.

Use a variety of tables, including Lucite trunks filled with flowers or anything colorful. Create side tables by layering white high-gloss paint on unfinished wood pieces and cover any other incidental tables with white fabric.

Measure the floor space and then purchase a carpet remnant. Cut it down to the proper size to cover the existing floor, then tack the corners down with gaffer's tape (available at any hardware store).

Scatter plush sheepskin rugs or fluffy white bath mats in front of couches, chairs, and ottomans.

Create luminous hues by replacing regular lightbulbs with colored bulbs. Alternate methods include covering white lights with a colored lighting gel or purchasing glass filters from a local lighting store.

Get things glowing with loads of candles! Float them in clear Lucite trays filled with water, and place votives everywhere.

Head to a hardware store and buy dimmers to use with floor lamps.

Match your playlist with the mood of your lounge space. For example, in a steamy setting, it's important to have upbeat music, but don't turn it up too loud. Keep the tunes at a volume that allows the guests to converse without yelling (leave the thumping bass for nightclub parties!)

If furniture is not provided, bring in chairs, tables, and couches from home or from a rental place and cover them in white fabric. Create tight groupings by snuggling couches and chairs close together. Ikea is always a great option for finding inexpensive and durable furniture.

CHIC TIP - if you don't own a specific piece of furniture you want for your lounge space and don't want to spend the money on buying it, borrowing furniture from a friend or neighbor is always a great solution!
