Tips to Personalize Your New Desk Space

We spend most of our lives at work – the average American will log 90,000 hours at work in a lifetime – and yet, we don’t seem to give our work decor as much thought or attention as we do our homes.

Your office space should be place to foster creativity, and a calm retreat from the stressful hours at work. If you are celebrating a new job, promotion or just in the mood to amp up your desk space, use these simple tips for a more fun and creative work environment.

Make a Mini Bulletin Board

Create a cute and simple bulletin board by taking a picture frame of whatever size you want -- 8x10 or larger -- and supergluing a fitted piece of cork to the back. You can easily find the DIY supplies at a craft store, and make within minutes.

On the board, tack up some of your favorite notes, cards, photos and memorabilia. You can prop it up on your desk, or hang it from a wall if there's wall space available.

Swap in Colorful Office Supplies

Amp up your boring old pens and staplers with colorful options to fit your personality. We love Poppin for their colorful (and affordable!) writing utensils, notepads and just about any office supplies you would need.

Love the Power of Flowers

If you're like me and don't get fresh flowers sent to work nearly often enough, you can buy some yourself from a nearby stand for a few dollars, or order a gorgeous arrangement on 1-800-Flowers.com. For a more permanent touch, invest in an arrangement of nice silk flowers in a vase. Flowers always give a fresh pop of color and add to an overall calming aesthetic you need at work.

Bring a Stack of Your Favorite Books and Magazines

Coffee table books aren't just for the coffee table. Bring in a few of your favorite books and magazines for decor and function. You can prop up your computer for a trendy new look, or just have the reading materials on hand for reference. On your lunch break, flip through a few of the pages if you need to regroup and get inspired.

Rest on a Fun Seat Pillow

We spend a lot of time -- at least 40 hours a week -- in our office desk chairs. It can get uncomfortable sitting in the same stiff spot all day, not to mention boring looking at the same chair everyone else has. Bring a comfortable seat pillow in a pattern of your choice to not only ease your back, but also add some fun to your space.

Or Lose the Chair Altogether

If you're a fitness fanatic, or just downright terrified of the statistic from Women's Health that states sitting for just 10 hours a week can up our risk of cardiovascular disease by 20 percent (yikes!), then opt for a standing desk instead. Prop your computer and keyboard up with some rustic crates or a stack of your favorite books, and try doing your work standing. If that's impossible, make sure to get up and walk around often so you're not tempted to sit for too many hours straight.

Frames, Knickknacks & Toys

Ultimately, your desk is about you, and you want to be reminded of your life outside of work from time to time. Display framed photos of you and your loved ones, and bring in travel souveniers and even desk toys to give you a smile throughout the day. All work and no play is no good for anyone!
