Upcycled Holiday Votives Craft

Save your glass baby food jars and turn them into upcycled masterpieces. This simple project is easy enough for the kiddos to help with and doesn't cost much to make, two of my crafting requirements.

I'm a huge fan of crafty décor that can carry over to the next holiday. These upcycled votive candles do just that. Leave them out to light a pathway for trick-or-treaters and then move them to your dining room table for a Thanksgiving centerpiece.

You could use this same technique on larger glass jars and place a pillar candle inside or fill the decoupaged jars with candy and hand out to party guests.

Supplies
  • Baby Food Jars
  • White Tissue Paper
  • Yellow Tissue Paper
  • Orange Tissue Paper
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge
  • Sponge Brush
Directions

Step 1: Peel labels off of clean, empty baby food jars. Tip: To remove labels from glass jars, soak in warm soapy water for 15 minutes. Remove as much of the label as possible, scraping with a knife. If you still have sticky residue, slather a layer of peanut butter over the jar and let sit for 15 minutes. Rub the peanut butter into the jar in a circular motion until the label is completely gone. Wash off peanut butter before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2: Cut tissue paper into little squares or other shapes.

Step 3: Brush a layer of Mod Podge over a small area on the jar and adhere tissue paper, overlapping so there are no spaces in between. Continue to Mod Podge and place tissue paper until the entire jar is covered. Repeat with the remaining jars.

Step 4: Brush a layer of Mod Podge over the tissue paper.

Step 5: Add a tea light candle inside jars. Place jars on a table or mantel for décor.
