7 Fun & Unique Ways to Keep in Touch in a Long-Distance Relationship

There's no denying that being in a long-distance relationship is tough. No matter how much you love your significant other – and how wonderful it is on the days you get to spend together – sometimes it's hard to cope with how much you miss him or her.

Luckily, there are some fun and easy ways to show your loved one how often he or she is on your mind. Even if you can't talk on the phone all day or video chat as often as you like to, there is plenty you can do to let your partner know that you're always there – even if you're thousands of miles away.

1. Send a Hand-Written Note

I'm sure you and your love text all day long, but sending a hand-written note, letter or card really proves that you took the extra time to write those thoughts down. With paper! And a pen! Remember those? If you don't have any personalized stationery, pick up a sweet card or find a piece of nice paper to jot your thoughts down. It's something your partner will have and save forever.

2. Lend Your Favorite T-Shirt

Your significant other probably remembers you in your favorite college tee or that old band T-shirt you got at that concert forever ago. No matter how much he or she might complain about you wearing it, they'll still be reminded of you whenever they see or wear your prized shirt. Extra points if you spritz on your cologne or perfume before sending so they can be reminded of your scent, too.

3. Or, Send a Pillow

You two can't sleep next to each other ever night, unfortunately. But if you ship off your favorite pillow (assuming you can part with it for that long), your partner can be reminded of you every night with the pillow next to him or her. Not only will it smell like you – and you can spritz some more cologne or perfume for good measure – but it makes for a perfect soft object to cuddle, second to you. If you're feeling really fancy, you can buy the Pillow Talk gadget, which connects two long-distance partners heartbeats and sleeping patterns via a spartphone app and wrist band. 4. Curate a Playlist

Thanks to advances in music streaming technology (yay, 21st century!), you don't have to record a mixed tape or burn a mixed CD anymore (although either of those things still make for amazing gifts). Now with no song limits, you can create your own mixed playlist on music sites such as Spotify. Add songs the two of you love jamming out to, and tracks that remind you of each other. Think about the concerts you've been to, soundtracks from your favorite movies and even the really really bad songs you just love to make fun of together.

5. Cue Up a Movie Date on Netflix

Traditional movie nights are out of the question, but you can pretend like you are watching them together thanks to video chatting and movie streaming services like Netflix. If you both can log onto the same account, make a movie selection and try to be as accurate as you can with hitting the play button. If you can split your screen (and have the bandwidth to handle it). have your partner on video chat so you can enjoy the movie together. Otherwise, you can go the old-fashioned way; find a movie on TV and watch it together over the phone or on FaceTime or Skype.

6. Cook a Meal Together

Even if you can't make dinner together every night, you can share the cooking experience together thanks to video chatting and a shared recipe. Pick out a favorite recipe you both want to try, get all the ingredients ahead of time, and make together while you keep your tablet or laptop open with video chatting. You both can swap helpful tips and tricks, and see if your meals turned out well. Then sit down together and enjoy it; keep your video chatting open so it's like having a dinner date together.

7. Send a Thoughtful Care Package

Your care package doesn't need to be too over-the-top or elaborate, but sending some fun essentials to get them through the week or until the next time you see him or her is incredibly thoughtful. Throw in a gift card to the local coffee joint, a book you loved or some of his or her favorite candy. People are more impressed with the thought behind the gift than the actual monetary value.
