Chocolate Cinnamon-Sugar Taquitos

Churros are one of my favorite Mexican desserts. It’s both the fried dough and cinnamon-sugar coating that really makes my mouth water. This dessert is a spin on a traditional churro using the shape and idea of a Mexican Taquito.

All this sweet recipe requires you to do is to take a flour tortilla and fill it with melted chocolate, fry it, and then coat it in cinnamon sugar. In moments you have a crispy, sugary Chocolate Cinnamon-Sugar Taquito.

Ingredients
  • 3 cups Canola Oil
  • 4 Medium-Sized Flour Tortillas
  • 1/4 cup Chocolate, Melted
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Cinnamon
  • Toothpicks, To hold together the Taquitos while frying
Directions

Heat the oil in a medium pot until it reaches 350 degrees F – Making sure you have enough space (depth and width) in the pot to fry the taquitos.

Place 1 tablespoon of chocolate in a line down the center of each tortilla.  Roll the tortilla up to create a long, skinny taquito. Insert into a toothpick through the rolled tortilla so it stays together while frying. If needed, cut the taquito in half so it will fit in the pot.

In a flat bowl/dish, stir together the sugar and cinnamon.  Set right next to the stove.

Fry the taquitos until they are crispy and turn golden brown, about 3 minutes. Remove the taquitos from the oil and immediately roll them around in the cinnamon-sugar mixture, being sure to completely coat the taquito. Remove the toothpick from the taquito.

Repeat with the remaining tortillas and chocolate. Once finished, serve the taquitos with some of the leftover melted chocolate for dipping.

These can be made up to 5 hours in advance.

Makes: 4 large Taquitos, 8 smaller ones if you cut them in half
