Crawling Crab Summer Cupcake Recipe

All you need to turn a simple cupcake into a cute, crawly crab is some store-bought licorice for the legs and candy eyes from the craft store. To serve, sprinkle light brown sugar "sand" on the platter first.

Bake your favorite cupcake recipe or use cake mix. If using store-bought frosting, I find it best to thicken it with powdered sugar, as the food coloring can make it runnier. Find the candy eyes, decorating bag, coupler and tip at the craft store. Use any large, round decorating tip you prefer. For food coloring, I suggest Americolor Soft Gel Paste, Red Red, found at specialty stores and online. For the licorice lace, Twizzlers Pull n’ Peel is a good choice.

Ingredients
  • Cupcakes
  • Frosting
  • Red food coloring
  • Red licorice lace
  • Scissors
  • Candy eyes
  • Disposable decorating bag
  • Coupler
  • Size 12 decorating tip
Directions

Prepare your cupcakes and frosting according to the recipes. Tint the frosting red with the food coloring. Prepare a decorating bag with coupler and tip and fill with the red frosting.

Snip the licorice lace into pieces about 3 inches long. You’ll need six for each cupcake. Insert the ends of three pieces of licorice lace on each side of the cupcake by pressing gently into the top of the cupcake at the outer edge.

Pipe red frosting in a circle on top of the cupcake and place two candy eyes at the front.

With a few simple steps, you can turn your regular old cupcakes into a set of creepy crawly summer crabs that the kids won't be able to get enough of!
