Crockpot Tailgate Recipe: Barbecue Chicken Sandwiches

Skip the boring tailgating parties and serve up a savory dish that will keep everyone warm, satisfied, and energized. Since you're on the go and won't have access to your handy oven, trade the stove for the slow cooker and you have endless possibilities!

Barbecue chicken sandwiches are a wonderful dish to make in your crockpot. Slow cooking the chicken with the barbecue sauce allows the chicken to become very tender and shred super easily. And once the chicken is done simmering, all you have to do is shred the chicken and place a large scoop on top of a toasted hamburger bun. It’s perfect for a tailgate party!


2-3 lbs of chicken breast, cleaned and trimmed

2 cups barbecue sauce, homemade or store-bought (plus more for serving)

2 teaspoons salt

3 teaspoons pepper

Hamburger buns, for serving


Place all the ingredients (except the hamburger buns) in the crockpot. Turn it to high and leave it to sit and cook, about 7 hours.

Once 7 hours have lapsed, remove the top from the crockpot and check the meat. The juices should be boiling and the chicken should be completely cooked, with no pink color. The chicken should also be very tender and fall apart easily. If it looks done, turn the crockpot off and leave the top on until ready to serve. (But if you won’t be ready to serve it for a few hours, turn the crockpot to low.)

Before serving, use a fork to shred the chicken (you can do this inside of the crockpot for easy cleaning and serving).

Put the hamburger buns next to the chicken and have people serve themselves by placing a large scoop of chicken inside each hamburger bun. Provide additional barbecue sauce for topping, if desired. Enjoy!

Note: If you are serving these sandwiches at home, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place the hamburger buns on a baking sheet. Place the hamburger buns in the oven to slightly toast, about 5-7 minutes. The barbecue chicken can also be made ahead of time and warmed right before serving, if necessary. Just be sure to allocate enough time to warm up the chicken.
