Hearty & Healthy Green Peas with Turkey Bacon

Although peas might not make an appearance at every Thanksgiving dinner, we always make it a point to include at least one savory dish featuring this veggie in our Thanksgiving menu.

It is a favorite of mine because it’s simple, classic, and always one of the healthier options on the Thanksgiving table.

My version of peas couldn’t be simpler. It requires only two main ingredients and literally takes minutes to make. Nothing is better than to make a simple and quick side for Thanksgiving when you have a laundry list of things to do. Even better is that these peas can be made ahead of time and re-heated when ready to serve.

To make my version of simple and healthy peas, all you need is turkey bacon and peas. You can make this recipe with real bacon or pancetta, which is of course still delicious, but the turkey bacon is much healthier option. The steps to making this recipe are very quick. You just sauté the turkey bacon in some olive oil, then add the peas, and allow the peas to cook and meld into the flavors of the olive oil and bacon. That’s it!

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 6 slices of turkey bacon, diced
  • 12 ounces of frozen peas, thawed
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Place a medium sauté pan over medium heat. Heat the olive oil in the pan and then add the diced turkey bacon to the pan. Sauté the turkey bacon until it turns a dark-golden brown.

Add the peas to the bacon in the pan and stir to coat the peas in the olive oil and bacon drippings. Allow the peas to cook in the pan for about 5 minutes.

Add salt and pepper to the peas and bacon. Once cooked, transfer the peas and bacon to a serving dish.

Serve immediately.

Note:These peas last up to 3 days in a sealed container. To re-heat, place the peas and bacon in a microwavable dish and microwave for 60-90 seconds.
