Mustard-Molasses BBQ Sauce

This sweet mustard BBQ sauce is indicative of what you'd experience in a South Carolina rib joint. Travel north to its sister state and chances are the BBQ sauce will be clear and spicy or a delicious concoction born of the region's creative folk and their ancestors.

We love to pair this sauce with our ribs, but it's not a bad pairing with steak or chicken, either!

Ingredients

1 cup grainy brown-yellow mustard
1 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt

Note: Makes about 2 1/2 cups

Directions

Combine all of your ingredients in a saucepan. Simmer over medium heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.

Allow to cool to room temperature for all of the flavors to blend. Use as a bbq sauce for chicken, ribs, or whatever you like.

Often, we'll marinate our meat in half of the sauce for about 4 hours, then grill. As the meat cooks, we use a brush to paint on more of the sauce to give it a crisp, yet moist texture.
