Pet-Friendly Peanut Butter Cookie Cake

The 4th of July can be a delicious time for humans and pets alike. But with smoke streaming from the grill, and picnic platters vulnerable to sniffing, searching snout-scouts, Independence Day is not the time to go lax on your vigilance pertaining to your doggie’s diet. Luckily, there are still plenty of fresh, flavorful options that would satisfy even Clifford himself!

The Perfect Puppy Plate

While people food may often be at limits at home, plain hotdogs, veggie dogs, and burgers are all pet-safe, cheap, and easy! Fresh fruit and vegetables are always an acceptable treat in the summertime heat! (just watch out for grapes: aka Puppy Poison!)

Don’t serve dairy based and perishable products like macaroni salad, potato salad, and coleslaw to your pet. You may have the tummy of a titan, but your furry friend does not!

Avoid dishes with thick sauces like ribs or BBQ chicken, and steer clear of spicy! The last thing a pet parent needs to deal with is a piquant pooch with an unbearable ulcer!

Make your pet a patriotic dessert!

American Flag Cookie Cake

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • Red and Blue Food Coloring
  • Star shaped cookie cutter

Preheat Oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mix the flour, cinnamon, and baking powder in a large bowl.

Mix the peanut butter and milk in a separate bowl until combined evenly. Then, combine both mixtures in the large bowl.

Separate your dough into two even batches and then remove a handful from one of the dough halves.

Add blue food coloring to the largest batch, red food coloring to the medium sized batch and leave the small handful untouched.

Mix the food coloring in thoroughly and roll each piece of colored dough into 1/4-inch thick sheets on a lightly floured surface

Use the star-shaped cookie cutter to make as many stars as you can from the uncolored dough.

Cut and arrange the red and blue dough into the shape of an American flag, placing the stars in the appropriate positions.

Roll over the sheet once to set the pieces together.

Bake for 20 minutes or until fully cooked through.
